Food grade bacterium can cut nitrogen use drastically
Oct 17:
The paper analyses a technology, which is based on a food-grade bacterium derived from sugarcane, is environmentally friendly and applies to all major crops. It provides a cost benefit to the grower through reduced fertiliser costs and improved yields. 8This is applied to the seed and spreads systemically through the plant thereby converting atmospheric nitrogen into a form that the plant can use. 8Further research shows that this technology reduced nitrogen fertiliser usage by up to 50% which lowers farming costs. In the future, sustainable agriculture will depend on the greater use of biological nitrogen fixation at a time when more food is needed to feed an increasing population.
